Born on August 12, 1955, she hails from a family of musicians, Jayalakshmi is a versatile musician, playing on the Veena, Violin, flute and she sings too.
Her father was her first guru from the age of 5, Research Scientist, (in Malaysia for over 40 years), Sri CS Krishnaswamy, who played the taught her basics in carnatic music and also the flute.
Jayalakshmi learnt the Violin at age 6 and at 10 years of age started the veena.
Veena: Sri Pudukottai Jayarama Iyer, in Chennai taught her for 10 years nuances of the instrument and her sincere dedication has made her into a fine veena artiste.
BSc degree in Chemistry from Stella Maris College, Chennai.
Jayalakshmi had the great fortune of having had the great Sangeetha Kalanidhi Padmabhushan Dr Sripada Pinakapani as his guru (introduced to him by her husband TV Sekhar who is the great Maestro's nephew) and imbibed his style of music onto her veena playing.
Jayalakshmi considers it a great honor that she had the opportunity of learning personally from the violin Maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman, his varnams and thillanas.
Jayalakshmi is an A grade artiste with the All India Radio. She was empaneled by ICCR in 2003. She is a member of the Local Audition Board for All India Radio.
Jayalakshmi is well known as a good teacher and has several disciples all over the world. She worked as Associate professor in the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University for MA Veena for 4 years. She is also occasionally invited as guest lecturer in Adyar Music College. She was invited to the Cleveland Festival to teach the Sustaining Sampradaya Children between 2007-2010 and performed solo concerts there too.
Jayalakshmi has performed all her life from a young age on the flute, violin and chose the Veena as her profession. She is featured regularly in the famous Chennai December Music Festivals in almost all the well-known sabhas establishing herself as an artiste of very high calibre, and also has done lecture demonstrations, thematic programmes all over India, abroad too.
She has given many lecture demonstrations and thematic concerts such as Pancalinga kritis of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, the Navagraha kritis and Kovur Pancaratnams of Tyagaraja, Abhayamba and Neelothphalamba kritis of Muthuswamy Dikshitar etc. Her lec dems include techniques of Veena play, and Tanam on the Veena.
Listening and attending concerts of music of the great stalwarts of yesteryears, like Sri Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Semmangudi Srinivasaiyer, KV Narayanaswamy, Madurai Mani Iyer, Ramnad Krishnan in her formative years helped shape her into a serious Carnatic musician without any gimmicks in her performances. Concerts abroad include Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Mauritius, Estonia, Germany, US. She has accompanied several artistes visiting from India to Malaysia/Australia on the violin and veena.
Jayalakshmi 's knowledge of music, nattuvangam for Bharatnatyam is well known and has made her in demand for consultation and programmes all over. She works closely with several Bharatnatyam artistes in Chennai and abroad.

Concert recordings, Tyagaraja Kritis, Annamayya Kritis tuned by Sripada Dr Pinakapani, Panchalinga Kshetra Kritis, Kovur Pancaratnams of Tyagaraja, Ganesha, Oothukadu and Swati Tirunal compositions.
